1935 FOUNDATION OF THE ‘WINERY COOPERATIVA DE LA SECA ‘

In a Spain immersed in the uncertainty of a political instability that would lead just a year later into a Civil War, the winegrowing families that had their vineyards in the surroundings of the small Valladolid town of La Seca – encouraged by the town doctor, Fermín Bedoya – decided to group together and form a cooperative that would allow them to get the most out of their work in the vineyards. The concept was simple: united, they would not only be bigger, but much stronger.

1938 FOUNDATION ADD

Just 3 years later, the partners decided to bring the wine to the winery for the first time and put it in large vats. They chose the best they had with a clear objective: to elaborate aged in a community way and in everyone’s home; with this vintage they would be officially constituted as ‘Bodega Cooperativa de La Seca’ in July 1939.

1944 SIGNATURE OF THE STATUTES OF ‘AGRÍCOLA CASTELLANA’

Less than a decade after its foundation, the cooperative changes its name to ‘Agrícola Castellana’ and defines its purposes and the responsibilities of the members of its Governing Board in signed statutes in La Seca in December 1944. Among other requirements, those who wanted to join as new cooperative members had to ‘be presented by two members and contribute at least 500 strains’.

1950 FIRST TRADEMARK ‘FINE 61 ‘

The 1950s saw the birth of the first commercial brand of the cooperative winery. Under the name of ‘Fino 61’, wine from solera, the traditional production of the area, is bottled and put on the market. The story behind this name is, to say the least, curious: during the winery’s first years there was a rumor that, of all the vats loaded with wine, number 61 was the best of all, which is why this vat would end up baptizing the first brand of the house.

1960 THE ‘PAYMENT OF THE FOUR STRIPES ‘

The current name of our winery is due to a payment on which in the decades of the ’50s and’ 60s it was said that the best vineyards of the cooperative were found and in the one that converged four municipal terms: La Seca, Rodilana, Medina del Campo and Rueda. The ‘Pago de las Cuatro Rayas’ is still owned by a partner of the cooperative winery and currently contains Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc vines.

1971 CÉSAR PRIETO JOINS AS MANAGING DIRECTOR

The ’70s witness the professionalization and modernization of the winery, which incorporates César Prieto at the head of the management tasks. Prieto will assume the Management for 37 years, in which he makes a firm and active commitment to the promotion of the wine sector and the recognition of the quality of the winery’s wines; In addition to his management tasks at Cuatro Rayas, he will be the drafter of the first regulation and president of the DO Rueda Regulatory Council between 1992 and 2000.

1975 ÁNGEL CALLEJA TAKES ADDRESS TECHNIQUE

Ángel Calleja –belonging to the first class of winemakers at the Escuela de la Vid in Madrid– joined the winery as technical director in the mid-1970s, where he will be dedicated body and soul for more than 40 years. With it, the winery will undertake different phases of transformation, process control and technical adaptations that will boost the production of Cuatro Rayas in a quantitative and qualitative way.

1975 BIRTH OF THE DENOMINATION OF WHEEL ORIGIN

The first Regulation of the PDO ‘Rueda’ and its Regulatory Council was approved in January 1980, being the first Denomination of Origin recognized in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. The wines of ‘Agrícola Castellana’ could benefit from this new organization from the outset, thus being recognized for their quality and the exceptional characteristics of the vineyards of their cooperative members.

1988 AMADOR DIEZ TAKES THE PRESIDENCY OF THE COOPERATIVE

Amador Diez de Íscar will hold the position of president of Agrícola Castellana for 21 years. During this period, he carries out his tasks with three essential objectives: to professionalize and protect the employment of cooperative wine-growing partners, optimize the quality of the winery’s products and enhance the value of the DO Rueda wines, whose Regulatory Council he will preside over in 2006. His figure is essential to understand the process of expansion and internationalization of the winery during the ’90s and later.

1990 MECHANIZED NIGHT HARVEST

The last decade of the 20th century brings with it technical innovations that will represent a before and after in the production of white wines. The winery incorporates these advances into its harvesting processes with the implementation of specialized machinery for the mechanical harvesting of the grapes, a technique with which it is achieved that the collection is fast and that the entry of the grapes into the presses occurs in optimal conditions. In addition, it is decided to carry out these processes at night, at which time the grape is subjected to thermal contrasts that preserve and enhance the aromas and properties of the harvested varieties.

2000 – INNOVATION AND GROWTH < / h4>

The energy brought by the change of decade, century and millennium has led the winery to grow and professionalize in a substantial way. The growth in sales figures for bottled wines is especially significant, going from around 2 million bottles at the beginning of the decade to reaching 10 million bottles in 2010. On the other hand, the workforce is growing and the organization chart of the winery is diversified: they are the first dawning of the current Commercial department, which incorporates specific technical personnel for Export, the Food and Hospitality channel. The Purchasing department was also created at this time and in 2010 a second bottling line was implemented in view of the exponential growth in demand for bottled product.

2010 – 75 ANNIVERSARY

THE 75th birthday of what was born as ‘Bodega Cooperativa de La Seca’ is celebrated in a very special way. 2010 is the year in which the first vintage of ‘Viñedos Centenarios’ is released – a Verdejo from parcels selected from those that were owned by the founding partners and which today is among the most successful products of the winery -, the beginning of the great sports and cultural sponsorships -being chosen as the official white wine of SEMINCI and beginning to sponsor the Valladolid Handball Club-, and it is also a year of great weight in the internationalization of the Cuatro Rayas brand with the arrival for the first time once to the Chinese market or the presence at the Annual Gala of the Hispanic Society in New York. Among other commemorative events for the 75th anniversary, the winery facilities host a tribute event to the trajectory of the Cooperative attended by more than 1,000 guests and authorities and, in addition, a delegation of representatives of the winery is received by the Príncipe de Asturias in the Palacio de la Zarzuela, where a centenary Verdejo strain is planted as an official gift to the Royal Family.

2015 EL VERDEJO DE RUEDA EN EL MUNDO

El último lustro lo protagoniza una de las etapas más dinámicas de la bodega cooperativa. Se hace una apuesta por la innovación y el desarrollo tecnológico ampliando las instalaciones con la construcción de una segunda sede, también localizada en La Seca, que acoge la planta de embotellado, la sección de logística y modernos espacios para tareas de administración, gestión y organización de eventos. Además de reforzar el posicionamiento de la marca Cuatro Rayas como referencia en el sector de los vinos blancos de Rueda tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, se amplía y diversifica de forma notable la cartera de productos con el lanzamiento de los primeros tintos de la bodega amparados por la DO Ribera del Duero. Nacen también los primeros vermouths de la bodega −elaborados a partir de verdejo y tempranillo−, frizzantes y una nueva categoría de vinos premium con la que se busca la excelencia y diferenciación en el sector. Bodega Cuatro Rayas acompaña al Real Valladolid CF en su ascenso a Primera División, protagoniza maridajes en el Concurso Nacional de Pinchos y Tapas y brinda por los ganadores del Premio Nacional de Periodismo Miguel Delibes. Se cosechan galardones y reconocimientos en publicaciones de prescripción enológica nacional e internacional y se celebran las 40 vendimias de Ángel Calleja al frente de la elaboración con el nacimiento de una gama exclusiva para hostelería y comercio especializado.

2019 BODEGA CUATRO RAYAS, VINO GREEN & SOCIAL E INAUGURACIÓN NUEVO CENTRO LOGÍSTICO

El último año ha sido clave en la historia de nuestra bodega a todos los niveles. Trascurridos casi 80 años desde el nacimiento de nuestra cooperativa, cambiamos el nombre de nuestra razón social de ‘Agrícola Castellana’ a ‘Bodega Cuatro Rayas’ y renovamos nuestros estatutos. Nos lanzamos a la venta a través de internet estrenando nuestra nueva tienda online e implementamos una aplicación como canal de comunicación con nuestros socios y empleados. Implantamos un Plan de Igualdad para garantizar la equidad de oportunidades entre todos nuestros trabajadores y cooperativistas y sellamos nuestro compromiso con la sostenibilidad social y medioambiental con el lanzamiento del marchamo propio ‘green & social’, que ampara nuestras acciones en el ámbito de la preservación del entorno natural y de la dinamización de la población rural.

Además, el 5 de mayo de 2019 inauguramos las nuevas instalaciones que llevan el nombre de Amador Diez, presidente cuya labor e impronta durante dos décadas (1989-2009) fue fundamental en el devenir de la actual Bodega Cuatro Rayas.

2020  #TODOIRÁBIEN

En un año que pasará a la Historia por la llegada de una crisis sanitaria internacional sin precedentes, Cuatro Rayas hace frente a la pandemia del COVID-19 demostrando una enorme capacidad de adaptación ante las adversidades. El Consejo Rector de la Cooperativa toma la decisión de renunciar a la aplicación de un ERTE a la plantilla y conserva el empleo de los trabajadores de la bodega, que adaptan sus tareas cotidianas poniendo en práctica fórmulas de teletrabajo y distancia social para mantener activas la producción, la distribución y las ventas. Se hace un esfuerzo notable por favorecer y facilitar la llegada del producto a los clientes finales a través de las cadenas de alimentación y la venta directa online, procurándose que los consumidores confinados en sus hogares tengan acceso a sus productos Cuatro Rayas de forma sencilla y eficaz.

Además, pese a las dificultades económicas y logísticas derivadas de los meses de confinamiento, se muestra el compromiso de la bodega con sus socios cooperativistas garantizándose la recogida de la totalidad de la uva en el periodo de vendimia.
