Víctor Fernández, icon of the Real Valladolid fans, talks with Benjamin about the past and present of Pucela. A ‘toast to the goal’ for the team and the city of his loves.
“Valladolid has been everything for me and that has made me stay here to live.” Thus, by boat soon, Víctor Fernández sends Benjamin’s first center to the back of the net. Companions in the José Zorrilla band, coincided in one of the most famous stages of Real Valladolid, Cantatore’s ‘EuroPucela’. “When I arrived in ’96, the coach, a very good team and a hobby (who have seen each other again this year with the promotion) that had not seen each other for years,” recalls Víctor, who shares locker room anecdotes with another mythical blanquivioleta like Benjamín Zarandona. Several years later, both take the opportunity to make a ‘toast to the goal’ with Verdejo Cuatro Rayas at the La Tasquita tavern and remember old times. Very good times.
“We were able to beat anyone. Barcelona was coming, Valencia was coming… it didn’t matter which team came that we ran over them at home ”, continues Víctor. Benjamin throws the wall at him with “the 3-1 we do to Barcelona… which happens to be that Ronaldo, who is the president right now, scores us the first goal…” and Víctor returns it at the first touch: “We gave him the I came back playing football very well, I remember having many scoring chances ”. The former Real Madrid youth player remembers that stage in Zorrilla as “four wonderful years in which I became international.” And it is that his performance with Real Valladolid earned him the call of José Antonio Camacho to debut with the Spanish National Team, in which he enters the field replacing Luis Enrique, current national team coach. It was February 23, 2000 and he will always keep it in his memory.
From the capital of Pisuerga he gave way to Villarreal, a club he knows from within, who marked him and who will soon face Real Valladolid: “It’s very different from what he had [referring to his time as a player there). It is a team that is above the rest, taking away Madrid, Barça, Atlético de Madrid, there it is… it is a team with a lot of talent ”.
Years later, he returned home to Valladolid. “The year of promotion with Mendilibiar was surely my best personal season. […] I think I am a player that over the years I have been playing better ”. “Like wine!” Says Benjamin, a gesture that Víctor shares in an accomplice way. In his own words: “I really enjoy the gastronomy and the wine of Valladolid”. Health!
